From 1946 to 1951, a group of independent grocers from Newark, NJ decided to purchase grocery products collectively under the cooperative (co-op) banner known as Wakefern Food Corp. Shared buying – in larger quantities at a lower cost – allowed these grocers to offer their customers the same goods their competitors were offering at unprecedented low prices.

In 1951, this partnership was further solidified with the advent of the ShopRite brand. Recognizing the importance of brand recognition, Wakefern members started to advertise in the Newark Evening News under this common name – ShopRite.

The philosophy was simple: Members knew that they had to “buy right” to offer their customers the best prices. Most ShopRite stores are family-owned to this day, many with second, third, or even fourth generation members.

Over the years, the co-op’s increasing membership and growth in sales led to a number of advancements and expansions of the business, enlarging stores, offering a full line of products and developing private label brands. ShopRite stores are some of the highest volume stores in the supermarket industry today.

Through more than 60 years of service, it has built its reputation as a low-price leader while offering the 7 million customers it serves each week unprecedented variety and customer service. Wakefern Food Corp. buys, warehouses, merchandises and transports products for ShopRite stores and provides countless additional support services to ensure customer satisfaction.

Today, 50 Wakefern cooperative members own and operate more than 250 ShopRite supermarkets across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Additionally, ShopRite Supermarkets, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Wakefern Food Corp. operates 33 stores in NY and NJ.
