Wakefern Food Corp. has a legacy of commitment to the community that spans its 75 years in operation. The focus of Wakefern’s support over the years has included issues of hunger and the effects of poverty; health and wellness; and education. We’ve also extended our hearts and hands, resources, and donations for disaster relief both in and beyond our community borders.
Fighting hunger has always been at the forefront of Wakefern’s commitment of giving back to the community. A long-time supporter of regional food banks, Wakefern provides them with in-kind donations, associate volunteers, and financial support through the ShopRite Partners In Caring program, a community-based hunger-fighting initiative. Established in 1999, this hunger-fighting initiative supports more than 2200 charities – soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters, senior citizen centers and other organizations on the front lines of fighting hunger. Since the program began, more than $50 million has been donated to local food banks.
For more than three decades, Wakefern Food Corp. has been a dedicated supporter of Special Olympics New Jersey, providing all of the food, snacks, beverages, suntan lotion and insect repellent needed for an entire weekend of competition. On top of these donations, hundreds of Wakefern associates volunteer their time to serve meals to the athletes, their coaches, families, and friends.
Since becoming title sponsor of the the ShopRite LPGA Classic in 1992, Wakefern has donated more than $36 million to area hospitals, food banks, education, and youth programs. The 54-hole tournament – held annually at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club – features some of the world’s best players. It also offers the cooperative a chance to give back to the community, by raising money for worthwhile causes each year.
